Steelers May Sign Former QB

Pittsburgh By selecting Arthur Smith, a former Atlanta Falcons head coach, to be their offensive coordinator, the Pittsburgh Steelers have found their man. Their focus now shifts to assembling the best team possible for their offense, and the decision-makers haven’t held back when it comes to selecting a quarterback.

Kenny Pickett would “resume” his QB1 status, but there would be competition, according to head coach Mike Tomlin’s statement at the end of the season. Mason Rudolph is the team’s hoped-for rival, but there’s no assurance the player will sign an offseason contract.

The “next step” for the Steelers, according to president Art Rooney II, is for the team to have strong quarterback performance.

What if, however, they signed a seasoned offensive coordinator who has great success working with Smith? He won Comeback Player of the Year, earned his first Pro Bowl, and assisted in leading the Titans to the AFC Championship game while he was working with Smith in Tennessee.

That veteran would be none other than Ryan Tannehill, who the Titans benched this past season and is now 35 years old and ready to enter the free agent market. According to Spotrac, his one-year projected market value is $4.9 million. It’s likely that he’s just searching for the proper fit.

Pittsburgh might be the right fit. He now gets to reunite with the offensive coordinator who helped him have his greatest season; they may not be searching for a veteran franchise quarterback, but they are seeking for competition.

The player brings a wealth of starting experience and NFL success to the Steelers. Given that his career is coming to an end, he is the best choice if they’re considering a bridge quarterback. Moreover, it won’t be expensive to bring him in for “competition.”

Rudolph is still their best choice, but if he signs a free agent contract elsewhere, the backup plan might include a well-known player who would find it simpler to adjust to an offensive playbook he is already familiar with.
