Ken Dorsey, the new offensive coordinator for the Browns, has received a lot of attention. Reports state that he was chosen over the weekend to take over for the important position on Cleveland’s staff.
Dorsey is a fascinating addition. According to certain criteria, his offenses in Buffalo over the past two years have produced top five results, and Josh Allen, the team’s standout quarterback, appears to be fully behind him. All of that was insufficient to keep him from losing his job midway through the season, as the Bills dropped to 5-5 in Week 10.
What then transpired? Why did Sean McDermott, head coach of the Bills, feel that a change was necessary? With a new beginning in Cleveland, what advantages does Dorsey offer?

1) It’s still uncertain if Ken Dorsey and Kevin Stefanski will continue to play call. What kind of mentality does Dorsey bring to an offense, regardless of whether he calls the plays?
SAL: “We are going to do what we do and they need to stop us” is how he views the world. He agreed to use a lot of 12-man teams and arrange players and formations in an ineffective manner.
2) As an OC, what were Dorsey’s strong points? Which were some of his weaknesses?
Finding methods to include several players in the offense, whether as pass-catchers or ball runners, was his strong suit while he was at Buffalo. His shortcomings were having too much installed and unmanageable rather than simplifying, focusing, and cutting down, as well as not having enough particular game-plan elements against defenders.
3) Several statistics indicate that Dorsey’s offenses in 2022 and 2023 were among the top five in the league; therefore, what went wrong or wasn’t functioning properly that finally resulted in his termination? Was he used as a prop?
Although the total numbers remained comparable, moving the ball and scoring points became considerably more difficult. During weeks five through ten in 2023, the Bills averaged 20.5 points per game and never scored more over 25 points. 2023 saw 17 turnovers by the Bills offense in his ten games as offensive coordinator. They turned it over nine times in seven games after he was sacked.
The word “scapegoat” bothers me because it implies the incident wasn’t deserved. It was by no means bad, but it was obvious that certain elements needed to be adjusted. Sean McDermott was not going to lose his job either. Thus, he is attempting to keep his position by firing the coordinator. That would be looking for someone to blame.
4) Last offseason, Kevin Stefanski shuffled his coaching staff by appointing Jim Schwartz as DC. Schwartz’s demeanor really altered the team’s mindset this season. What qualities of Dorsey’s personality are the Browms getting?
He is a very reserved individual. Having seen Jim Schwartz up close and knowing him from here in Buffalo, Dorsey is essentially the complete opposite kind of person. Having said that, he is very competitive. He is a very serious and industrious worker. McDermott used the word “energy” multiple times when he made the adjustment. Joe Brady provided the attack with the extra vigor he believed it required.
5) What can Browns supporters anticipate from Dorsey’s coaching and usage of Deshaun Watson, given his past work with Josh Allen—who clearly supported him—and even Cam Newton?
The Buffalo media and fans had grown more irate with Josh Allen’s lack of use of his legs. To keep him healthy for the season and beyond, there was undoubtedly a mindset within the team to not use him as much as they had in the past, but it got to the point where the offense was suffering from not using Allan enough as a runner. I used to wonder if Dorsey knew he needed Josh and didn’t want to take a chance, so he wasn’t using him in that way. Brady took over, and Allen started using his legs a lot more, with really positive effects.
