AFCON: Following the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Angola, Nigeria’s Nwabali breaks a 44-year record

In the midst of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali broke a 44-year record for Super Eagles goalkeepers on Friday.

This became feasible when Nwabali won four straight clean sheets in an important competition (AFCON).

In the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, the goalkeeper for Chippa United kept a clean sheet against Angola, surpassing both the record set by Best Ogedegbe in 1980 and Alloy Agu’s three-game streak for the Super Eagles in 1990.

After Ademola Lookman’s goal helped Nigeria defeat Angola 1-0 in the quarterfinal, he assisted Jose Peseiro’s team to advance to the AFCON semifinal.

Nwabali had kept clean sheets against Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and now Angola before the match.

In his five games against Equatorial Guinea, he has only given up one goal.

Nwabali will look to build on his stellar performance when Nigeria plays the victor of South Africa versus Cape Verde in the round of 16.
