Breaking: US Verifies $1 Billion Viper Attack Helicopter Sale to Nigerian Air Force

Nigeria has received confirmation from the US Department of Defense (DoD) that it will purchase 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

In December, Northrop Grumman was also given a $7.7-million contract to supply 32 mission computers for the Bell helicopters.

It is anticipated that the contract will be finished in June 2024.

The US State Department announced in January that Nigeria had made the first installment payment following the contract award.

In April 2022, the State Department granted Abuja’s request for a helicopter, along with systems for night vision imaging, training, and guidance.

According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, it “will better equip Nigeria to contribute to shared security objectives, promote regional stability, and build interoperability with the US and other Western partners.”

“This proposed sale will improve the security of a strategic partner in sub-Saharan Africa, supporting the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States.”

The multipurpose aircraft can perform strike, escort, and reconnaissance missions

 

It joins the 54 military aircraft, both manned and unmanned. Nigeria has attempted to address a number of security issues, such as banditry and an Islamist insurgenc

 

The m-346 attack aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, Agusta 109 Trekker multi-role helicopters, and Wing Loong II drones manufactured in China are among the platforms whose procurement has been approved.
