It is worth calling. Bill Belichick is currently off the clock. He was effectively fired by the Patriots, and he was rejected by every team looking to fill a head coaching position. He therefore has the year off.
Additionally, the 49ers require a defensive coordinator. It is theoretically possible for Belichick to do nothing for a year or to coach the San Francisco 49ers defense in Santa Clara, possibly win a Super Bowl, and then reenter the head coaching market the following year with an even stronger resume.
The 49ers’ pitch would be this: Why not stay at home and play with your dog instead of coaching a possible Super Bowl defense? Decide on a price.
It seems reasonable to assume that Belichick would demand compensation nearly equal to that of Kyle Shanahan, as well as total command over the 49ers’ defensive system and personnel decisions. Because Belichick believes he is the greatest coach of all time and will never back down, he would need almost as much power as Shanahan.

Nevertheless, I don’t see Belichick accepting to serve as a coordinator for any organization. He just can’t let go of being a head coach because of his ego.
