Alabama signed Former Patriots QB after…
For the New England Patriots, a new era has begun. But on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine, it seemed a lot like the past, with the Patriots’ representatives offering little information about the team’s 2024 quarterback plans.
Although Jerod Mayo, the new head coach of the Patriots, and Eliot Wolf, the former director of scouting for New England, had nothing insightful to say about their plans for Mac Jones and the position, a former quarterback for the organization did on Tuesday.
During Jones’ first two NFL seasons, Brian Hoyer, an eight-year veteran of New England, covered for him as a backup quarterback.
Jones participated in the Pro Bowl and started every game for the Patriots as a rookie in 2021, a season that saw New England advance to the playoffs. Jones had a less successful season in 2022 after offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels resigned to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, which was made worse by an ankle injury that kept him out of three games and the majority of another one.
Things went south for Jones and the Patriots in 2023. New England’s record fell to 4-13. As Bailey Zappe, Jones was benched and did not participate in the season’s final six games.
In an interview with NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Hoyer stated that the Patriots’ best bet for 2024 would be to put Jones back in the starting quarterback position and select an explosive playmaker, like Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the son of a Pro Football Hall of Fame pass-catcher, with the third pick in the NFL Draft on April 25.
