Rumors: Alabama AD Greg Byrne gone dow…

Greg Byrne, the athletic director at Alabama, is unaware of the source of the report that he is a candidate for the same job at Texas A&M. He claimed he hasn’t tried to promote himself as a contender and doesn’t have an agent.

He is therefore unsure of where it began.

However, that is currently irrelevant. In an interview with 247Sports on Wednesday, he made an effort to allay rumors regarding his employment.

“It goes without saying that I am aware of the connections because my dad was the AD there,” Byrne stated. “My folks are still residing there. However, I only want to be the AD in Alabama.

Byrne attended Mississippi State (2008–10) and Arizona (2010–17) before moving to Tuscaloosa in 2017.

Bill, his father, worked for many years as an athletic director at Texas A&M, Oregon, and Nebraska.

After 17 seasons and six national titles with the Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, the coach of Alabama football, announced his retirement in January. Byrne, 52, recently completed the largest hiring of his career.

Byrne selected the famous coach’s replacement swiftly. Byrne flew to Washington and secured former Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer within 49 hours of Saban’s departure.

In just two seasons, DeBoer turned around a 4-8 team in Washington to go 25-3, including a playoff semifinal victory and a trip to the championship game. For his efforts in 2023, he was the recipient of five different national coach of the year awards.

DeBoer was the head coach of the NAIA schools at Sioux Falls and Fresno State before coming to Washington.
