Alabama football: Nick Saban reveals his retirement for…

Nick Saban, a legendary college football coach who won seven national titles during his 50-years career—six of which were at the University of Alabama—announced his retirement in January.

In less than two weeks following Alabama’s overtime loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinal, Nick Saban unexpectedly announced his retirement, taking the highly sought-after head coaching position at Alabama. Additionally, Saban described his reasoning for retiring in an ESPN piece written by Chris Low.

“I thought we could have a great team next year, but maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you speak with have two questions they want answered: How much will you pay me, and what guarantees do I have that I’ll play because they’re considering transferring?” said Saban.

“The foundation of our program has always been the amount of value we can create for your future, your personal growth, your academic achievement in order to graduate, and your development into an NFL player.”

“Maybe this isn’t working anymore, that the objectives have changed, and now it’s just about how much money I can make as a college athlete,” I’m telling myself. That’s not a bad thing, per se. I’m not saying it’s incorrect; I’m just pointing out that it’s not our core values and the reason we’ve succeeded over the years.

Nick Saban steps down as developments in college football continue.
