Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to add another veteran to challenge Kenny Pickett as they work through their quarterback problem this offseason. It’s not a given that the team will hang on to its end-of-year starter, Mason Rudolph, despite their best wishes. It’s possible that they are searching for a backup plan, and retired linebacker Arthur Moats has someone in mind.

On his podcast, The Arthur Moats Experience, Moats stated that he is advocating for the signing of Sam Darnold, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Despite being on his third NFL team, the former first-round choice of the New York Jets has demonstrated starting ability in the appropriate system.

“You saw Sam Darnold come in and play good this year,” Moats stated. “You are aware that he has a long history and a strong pedigree, but more significantly, his talent outweighs his potential productivity. You are in a practice setting, discussing talent. Are you aware of how difficult it is to defeat a professional at that level? We don’t think of Sam Darnold as our franchise quarterback, but is he good enough to start? If not, we need to pick a player the next season. Yes.

In his lone game of the season, Darnold completed 28 of 46 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns, with one pick made. In the NFL, he is 21-35 as a starter with 12,064 passing yards, 63 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions. His percentage of career completion is 59.7.

When the Steelers search for a rival for Pickett, they will examine every free agent that is available. Finding “their” quarterback is ostensibly the organization’s top priority this summer, as Team President Art Rooney II recently stated that finding excellent quarterback play is the “next step” for the group.
